Music Monday: 2014 VMAs

Yesterday the year's most controversial awards show happened & here's your lowdown on the 2014 Video Music Awards.

The Performances

The show kicked off with Ariana looking cute as ever in a sparkling one piece (with boots to match) singing one of her new singles 'Break Free'. I l o v e her to bits, but that's no secret. That performance went into Nicki Minaj singing her new single 'Anaconda', decked out in a jungle inspired number two piece. Finally, Jessie J took the stage to start the threesome's collab 'Bang Bang' looking absolutely amazing in a short printed dress with a sky high slit. Her vocals are out of this world, but that was a given. Nicki did appear to have an almost-wardrobe-malfunction on stage after not having enough time to zip her dress all the way, but props to her for keeping it together (pun intended LOL) on stage. If there was a performance to open the show, this was it. Badass

Taylor Swift performed her single 'Shake It Off', from her upcoming album '1989', wearing a silver metallic fringed two piece (similar to a Beyonce outfit from a previous year). Her BFF Lorde introduced her, which I thought was super cool. I love this song, and it was an adorable performance.

Kim K's friend Sam Smith performed his hit 'Stay With Me'. Just him and a piano. His vocal talent is amaze.

Usher performed his song 'She Came to Give It To You' with Nicki. He's Usher, so, that's all I have to say.

Next up was 5 Seconds of Summer. These newbies performed their new single 'Amnesia'. It wasn't bad, wasn't spectacular. Love em' though.

Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora performed 'Black Widow'. I don't personally like this song, however it did sound way better live than it does when I hear it on the radio. The music sounded more full, and I'll admit I was kind of feelin it.

Maroon5 performed 'Maps' outdoors. Their stage was awesome. I don't really listen to their new stuff, so I didn't really care about this. Adam looked hot, as per usual.

Beyoncé closed the show with a 15 minute medley of her entire 'Beyoncé' tracklist. Visually this performance was amaaaaaaaazing. The lighting, the dancers, the choreo. Everything was visually stunning. Beyonce was an amazing performer, but that's nothing new. The best part of the performance by far, however, was when the camera cut to Blue Ivy dancing to Bey's performance. Not only the dancing was cute, but the fact that Jay caught her and did a double take made this moment even better. He was surprised as hell. CUTEST part.

The Speeches

Ed Sheeran won for Best Male Video (Sing), and gave the quickest speech I've ever heard anyone give. He's so adorable.

Common introduced Best Hip Hop Video, but before doing so paid tribute to & shed light on the incidents happening in Ferguson, MO. There was a moment of silence for Mike Brown & for Peace. I'm really really glad he did it.

Miley Cyrus (queen of last year's VMA's controversial topic) was extremely low key this year. That is, until she won for Video of The Year for 'Wrecking Ball' and, sent up a young blond boy in her place. Everyone was confused until he pulled out a piece of paper and began reading. He went up on Miley's behalf to speak about youth homelessness. The boy speaking was actually her date, Jesse. A homeless teen. The fact that she used that platform to shed light on something she was passionate about was really amazing. Celebrities get so much screen time, so much press. They have this great vehicle for getting their voices heard. And while it's nice to thank the people that helped you get to where you are, it's even nicer to give attention to people that still need a helping hand. So good on you, Miley. The Bad & The Sidenotes

The only thing about the show that stuck out as odd was the Robin Williams "tribute". Out of nowhere they started showing pictures (like, six of them) then cut to commercial. No introduction or heartfelt speech, no 'Rest In Peace, Robin Williams 1951-2014). N o t h i n g. It was so so so weird. If you're gonna do it, do it properly...

What was Dylan O'Brien's hair. He's way too cute to be rocking that hair style. That's all.

Ariana & Big Sean were holding hands while walking backstage. 1000000% they didn't know they were on the backstage cam. Have fun denying those dating rumours now!

All in all, this year's show was pretty lack-luster compared to previous drama-filled years. No Madonna-Britney kisses, no one getting Kanye'd, no middle aged men gyrating against 20-something year old twerking singers. WHERE WAS THE DRAMA MTV. Guess we'll have to wait to see what 2015 has in store for us....
