Your Holiday Mom

Hello! The holiday season is a time for family, and friends and love. It exudes a warm, comforting feeling. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to feel this way, which can turn this time of year into a really trying period. Even though the holidays are over, I still thought it was important to share. This Feature Friday we're featuring a website that's designed to spread a little love during the holiday season, to those who need it most.

Your Holiday Mom is a website that features letters written by mothers around the world, offering words of wisdom, guidance, and love to youth in the LGBTQ+ community. It aims to give them a "virtual home for the holidays". Teens (and adults) in this community often find themselves feeling isolated, alone and unloved by those that matter most in their lives - their family. More specifically, their parents. This site hopes to send the message that someone, somewhere out there loves you. That you are cared for, are loved, and that you matter.

I've read some of the letters, and they're absolutely amazing (and almost brought me to tears). The feeling of love, comfort and acceptance is unbelievable. Letters are written by both mothers with and without LGBTQ+ children, and convey an insane amount of care, warmth and love.

Reading through the comments section, you see stories of both teens and adults that say this site has helped them through the holidays. That they've felt love on this site that they haven't in years, sometimes in their entire lives. And that is an amazing thing.

In the wake of the death of Leelah Alcorn, the timing of this site could not be more perfect. If your parents are unwilling to accept and love you for who you are, you can now hear the words from mothers that are. It doesn't just stop at Moms, either. There are categories for Dad, Friend, and Sibling letters as well.

I'm so happy that this project exists, and I hope it continues to spread love, acceptance, and comfort for many holiday seasons to come.
